The journey so far....

By Amanda & Melodie

May 2021

Cable is continuing her training to become a service dog at RuffSport and is growing like a weed. Over the past 5 ½ months she has responded well to positive training techniques to learn basic obedience skills and to become well socialized and tolerant of other dogs.

Cable has learned some basic cues that will be useful when she begins to train for her job as Amanda’s service dog. As Cable will go everywhere with Amanda, it is important that she learn to lie “down” in front of Amanda or quietly “under” a table. She must be able to “sit” for extended periods of time and to maintain her position until she is released from it.

Cable’s trainer uses play and positive reinforcement techniques to teach her to want to do the jobs she is being asked to do.

It will be several more months before Cable has a solid foundation in basic obedience skills and is ready to begin training in the specific tasks that will make her a seizure-response service dog.

We continue to run a Go Fund Me campaign (Cable’s Calling: Born to be a Service Dog), to raise the funds needed to support her future training. At the current time we are pleased to say that we have raised $18,000 towards our goal of $36,000. Halfway there!

During the pandemic, and particularly during the stay-at-home order, it is difficult to raise these funds. It would be wonderful if you would consider sharing our links with friends and family who might be interested in contributing to this cause.

We look forward to the day when Cable is ready to take over Kira’s job and to help Amanda to go about her daily activities safely and independently. We will keep you posted on her progress!
