30th Anniversary Pearl Gala

On Saturday, April 21st, 2018, Epilepsy York Region will be hosting its 30th Anniversary Pearl Gala at the Terrace Banquet Centre. This special event is two-fold in that not only will it help raise needed funds to support our children and families with epilepsy, but it also an evening to celebrate thirty years of service, education, advocacy, and support to our community.

Epilepsy York Region, a volunteer driven organization, is so proud to celebrate this milestone. For the past 30 years we have provided countless hours of support to schools, community groups, and health service providers with the necessary information to keep our families safe. We have assisted many by providing the resources they need to support them while living with epilepsy such as – tutoring, education/seizure response seminars for classmates and places of employment, summer/winter camps, social support programs, one on one support as well as peer support. Most importantly, we have been a voice for those who hide behind the stigma, we have been a friend.

In 2018, our goal is to grow our social programming for the children and families we support.  The greatest hurdle that children with epilepsy face is the fear of feeling different from their peers, the thought of not knowing when a seizure will occur – who will see it, and how will others react. Social support for this group will provide them a safe place to be themselves and meet others with the same fears. Further, parents and caregivers are given the opportunity to learn coping strategies, developments in treatment and care, and of course, connect to others just like their children.
